What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, commonly known as gingivitis, is a periodontal (gum) condition. It’s an infection of the gums and tissues that support your teeth. Because gingivitis is usually a painless condition, most patients don’t realize anything is wrong until the infection progresses to its advanced state, periodontitis.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of gingivitis. Without proper brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar build-up on your teeth, leading to tooth decay and infections in the teeth or gums. Good at-home care and regular cleanings are your best defense against gingivitis. However, some health and lifestyle factors can increase your risk of developing gum disease. These factors include:

  • Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco
  • Family history and genetics
  • Crooked, crowded, or uneven teeth that are difficult to keep clean
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Puberty
  • Diabetes
  • Some medications, such as steroids, cancer therapy drugs, oral contraceptives, and certain types of anti-epilepsy drugs

How Is Gum Disease Treatment?

At our practice, Dr. Drew treats gum disease by performing scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure. The procedure happens in two stages: scaling, which removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Next is root planing smoothes the surface of the tooth root, helping the gums reattach to the tooth.
